What is Uloric?
Uloric is a gout drug. Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when increased uric acid levels create deposits in a patient’s joints, leading to bouts of extreme pain and swelling. The drug clinically known as febuxostat was approved as a gout treatment in 2009, because it lowers the uric acid levels in a patient’s bloodstream. The drugmaker, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, manufactures and markets febuxostat under its brand name, Uloric. Unfortunately, studies have shown that taking Uloric can cause severe heart injuries.
What Are the Potential Injuries Associated with Uloric?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) compared the use of Uloric to another drug, allopurinol, in the treatment of gout patients. The FDA found that Uloric showed an “an increased risk of heart-related death and death from all causes with Uloric.”
So, on February 21, 2019, the FDA required Takeda Pharmaceuticals to put a Black Box Warning (the most prominent type of warning) on Uloric. Now, the approved use of Uloric is specifically limited to certain patients who are not treated effectively or experience severe side effects with allopurinol.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals is facing a growing number of lawsuits alleging that they knew, but did not warn, about these risks of major side effects of Uloric, causing grave injuries to patients.
Do I Have an Uloric Claim?
If you or a loved one has taken Uloric and had serious cardiovascular injuries (such as heart attack, myocardial infarction, stroke or death), you may be entitled to compensation.
It is strongly recommended that you seek counsel experienced in Uloric claims and injuries. Have Uloric Lawsuits Been Filed?
Attorneys across the nation are currently investigating lawsuits against the manufacturers of Uloric, based on potential claims that the manufacturers should have warned patients – and their doctors – of the known potential side effects of Uloric, including “an increased risk of heart-related death and death from all causes with Uloric.”
Though very early in these investigations, it is expected that several lawsuits will be filed and eventually consolidated in some manner, possibly in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which centralizes pretrial activities for multiple cases to save time, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.
