What is a TDF Drug?
TDF drugs are used to treat HIV/AIDS. The drug clinically known as tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (or TDF) was approved as an oral HIV treatment in 2001. It is an antiretroviral, which basically disrupts the progression of the HIV virus at the cellular level. The drugmaker, Gilead Sciences, markets TDF in combination with other drugs under the popular brand name, Truvada, as well as other brand names, such as Atripla, Complera, Stribild, Symfi-Lo, Cimduo and Viread. Unfortunately, studies have shown that taking TDF drugs can cause severe kidney and bone injuries.
What Are the Potential Claims and Injuries Associated with TDF Drugs?
The drugmaker, Gilead Sciences, has been the subject of numerous lawsuits, including one filed by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. These lawsuits essentially allege that Gilead knew that TDF drugs had to be given in high doses to be effective, which meant it could damage the kidneys and bones. Yet the company failed to adequately disclose those dangers in the medicine’s label.
Moreover, Gilead is alleged to have developed a much safer HIV treatment compound, tenofovir alafemanide fumarate (or TAF). However, it is alleged that Gilead purposefully delayed the introduction of the safer TAF drugs, despite Gilead’s knowledge of the injuries being caused by the TDF drugs, in order to reap extended profits from Gilead’s drug patents on the TDF drugs (at the height of usage, Gilead’s TDF drugs were earning over $10 billion in annual sales). Complaints go on to assert that, after Gilead purposefully delayed the development of its TAF drugs, Gilead did eventually market TAF in combination with other drugs, under the brand names Genyova, Odefsey, Descovy and Biktarvy. But, by that time, there had already been thousands of reports of severe kidney and bone injuries from TDF drug therapy.
Those injuries include, but are not limited to:
KIDNEY INJURIES
- acute kidney injuries;
- chronic kidney disease;
- renal failure;
- and related nephritic injuries.
BONE INJURIES
- fractures;
- osteoporosis;
- osteopenia;
- and related orthopedic injuries.
Do I Have a TDF Drug Claim?
If you or a loved one has taken a TDF drug (such as Truvada, Atripla, Complera, Stribild, Symfi-Lo, Cimduo or Viread) and experienced serious kidney or bone injuries, you may be entitled to compensation.
It is strongly recommended that you seek counsel experienced in TDF drug claims and injuries. Stark & Stark’s TDF drug claims attorneys are actively seeking TDF drug settlements and filing TDF drug lawsuits against the makers of TDF drug, on behalf of patients injured by this potentially defective drug. Have TDF Recall Lawsuits Been Filed?
Attorneys across the nation are currently filing individual and class action lawsuits against the manufacturer of TDF drugs, based on claims that the manufacturer should have warned patients – and their doctors – of the known potential side effects of TDF drugs. These lawsuits further allege that the manufacturer of TDF drugs should have discontinued those drugs, in favor of the much safer alternative TAF drugs. It is expected that most or all of these claims will eventually be consolidated in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which centralizes pretrial activities for multiple cases to save time, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.
