Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is an unfortunately common phenomenon. Domestic violence is not limited to only physical acts, as threats and harassment may qualify if you believe you are in danger and that you fear physical violence may occur. It is imperative to contact your attorney and the police if you believe harm will occur or has already occurred. If so, you can apply for a Restraining Order, which will prevent your partner from having any contact with you, and will enable the police to remove or arrest the partner if there is further contact.

LGBT Issues, Same Sex Marriage, & Civil Unions
Since 2013, the state of New Jersey has recognized same sex marriages, and in 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed that same sex marriage was legalized across the country. Since the recognition of same sex marriages, same sex couples are afforded all the same rights as heterosexual couples. However, for those couples who chose to enter into and remain in civil unions prior to the legalization of same sex marriage; it is important to recognize that the dissolution of a civil union is a different process than a divorce and must be handled accordingly.

Prenuptials
A prenuptial agreement is contract which must be signed by both prospective spouses before marriage. Prenuptial agreements can include a variety of issues regarding property, businesses, or intended spousal support in the case of a divorce. Because of their complicated and often sensitive nature, it is important for the future spouses to have independent legal counsel review the terms of the agreement.
