My Zoom Deposition is Next Month – No Problem

Today, my attorney’s office called and said my Zoom deposition is scheduled for next month. Initially I was worried, but then I remembered I didn’t do anything wrong; the other person did. Also, as long as I tell the truth, everything will be fine.
So what is a Zoom deposition, how does it work, and what should I do to prepare?

During these unusual times, Zoom depositions have become the new norm. Everyone, including the parties, attorneys, and court reporters, are safely in their homes. In the past, you had to drive to an attorney’s office and spend several hours in a conference room. Now, the Court Reporter’s office will make all the arrangements, and all you have to do is click on the Zoom link five minutes before the deposition starts.

During your Zoom deposition, it is important to be in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. If your house is loud and there is not a quiet place inside, there is nothing wrong with retreating to your car. You also want to make sure the lighting is decent so you can be seen clearly through the video camera on your device. Finally, you want to appear in front of a neutral background, like a blank wall or even a door.

Since the deposition will probably last a few hours, you will want to request the day off from work the day of deposition. Also, since the deposition is a timely matter, it is best to use a computer for the Zoom link. However, if you don’t have a computer, you can use your mobile device, such as an iPhone. In this case, make sure your phone is fully charged before you begin the deposition.

Since you still have over a month to prepare, your attorney will call you a few times prior to the deposition to help you get ready. Please take these calls and preparation time very seriously. Since 99% of civil cases settle before trial, the deposition is most likely the one time you will be able to tell your side of the story. For instance, in the case of an automobile accident, you will want the insurance company to know how the crash has impacted your life.

Again, you have a month to prepare for your deposition, so you have nothing to worry about at the moment. Remember, all you have to do on the day of your deposition is tell the truth and everything will be fine.
