The Long-Lasting Effects of Sexual Abuse
The lasting effects of institutional sexual assault on victims are profound and severe, both physically and psychologically. The added violation of trust is also a central component, as victims feel betrayed by the very institutions or individuals meant to support and protect them. It is common for victims of sexual assault to feel a profound sense of vulnerability, shame, and isolation, often coupled with feelings of guilt and self-blame. The trauma of sexual assault and mistrust has long-lasting effects, impacting survivors’ mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.
