PPI claims are on the rise. PPIs are essentially a class of prescription and over-the-counter drugs that reduce the production of acid by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. These drugs, however, can allegedly cause extensive kidney damage. Numerous studies have shown the potential for injury from PPI use, and drug manufacturers have been required to add and strengthen product label warnings.
In response to number of strong research data and reported injuries from use of PPIs, a number of cases have been filed against drug makers alleging injuries. Those cases have been slated to be consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which centralizes pretrial activities for multiple cases to save time, court costs, and attorney’s fees.
Are you impacted by the PPI claims? You may be entitled to compensation.
If you or someone you love has taken Proton Pump Inhibitors (or PPIs), such as Nexium, PrevAcid, or Prilosec, and believe you have suffered an injury, it is strongly recommended you speak with your physician. Injuries from PPI use can include acute interstitial nephritis, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, and acute kidney injuries. If you believe you have suffered such an injury, you should seek legal counsel experienced in handling PPI lawsuits and injury claims to determine if you are eligible for compensation.
Stark & Stark attorneys are actively seeking PPI settlements and filing PPI claims for those injured or killed from the potentially defective drug.
What are PPIs? Has anyone filed a PPI Lawsuit?
PPIs are a type of medication largely used to treat frequent heartburn related to acid reflux, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and other conditions. PPIs are among the most widely used drugs in America with over $13 billion in sales in 2015. They work to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking the acid-producing enzyme called the gastric proton pump. There are many different PPIs on the market, with different brand names (containing various constituents) and there are PPI lawsuits related to many of these brands. These include:
- Aciphex (rabeprazole)
- Dexilent/Kapidex (dexlansoprazole)
- Nexium (esomeprazole)
- PrevAcid (lansoprazole)
- Prilosec (omeprazole)
- Protonix (pantoprazole)
- Vimovo (esomeprazole and naproxen)
- Zegerid (omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate)
These medications are available by prescription or, in some cases, over-the-counter. PPIs were developed, manufactured and distributed by various pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Takeda, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Eisai.
According to studies, including a 2016 study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA Internal Medicine), PPIs have been found to potentially increase the risk of kidney damage in patients who take the drugs. PPI lawsuits have recently been filed against the makers of the PPIs, claiming that the drugs cause acute interstitial nephritis, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, and acute kidney injuries.
These lawsuits are under consideration to be consolidated in an MDL in the United States District Judge, Middle District of Louisiana. The allegations in the PPI MDL include claims that the PPI manufacturers knew of the defect in their products and resulting danger to the public, but failed to properly warn patients or their doctors. The allegations also include claims that the PPI drugs were more addictive and not as effective as other, less potentially harmful over-the-counter remedies.
